Sixty years roll by, each with its own stem and branch — and a handful of them will do something to your chart. A passing year completes a combine your branches have been waiting for. Another snaps aclash straight into your Day branch. A third mirrors one of your pillars exactly, or brings the element youruseful god prizes. These are the critical years — the points where the calendar rings your chart, and readers sit up to listen.
How a year "hits" a chart
The main signals are mechanical and easily scanned:
- Mirror moments — the year repeats or reverses one of your four birth pillars (Fu Yin / Fan Yin). Whatever that pillar stands for comes front and center that year.
- Clash years — the year's branch clashes one of your pillars' branches, most famously the Day branch (thespouse palace). Relationship and location weather, usually.
- Combine completion — the year's branch arrives as the missing member of a triple combine your chart already hosts two-fifths of. Readers call this "assembling the team".
- Useful-god years — the year's element is one the chart is conventionally said to lean on (or, in its opposite, the unwanted element pressing hardest). The nudge is to build with that element's weather while it lasts.
What a flagged year actually means
Here is the honest middle path: a flagged year marks concentration, not verdict. A mirror spouse-palace year concentrates the marriage room's theme — arguments can surface, and so can intimate breakthroughs. A useful-god wealth year concentrates money weather — opportunities appear, and so do temptations. The chart describes the intensity, the weather; you supply the choices. This is why the same flagged year reads as a triumph in one life and a disaster in another: the calendar rang, but the person answered.
