Hidden Stems

藏干 · The Cast Inside Each Branch

Every Earthly Branch is not a single character but a room. Along with its own element, each branch contains two or three hidden stems (藏干) — smaller energies tucked inside it, like seeds in a pod or actors waiting backstage. Read the eight visible characters and you know the surface; read the hidden stems and you gain entry to the subtext.

One branch, several voices

Traditional tables give each branch a lineup of hidden stems, ordered by weight — the main qi (本气), the central qi (中气), and the remnant qi (余气). A few common examples:

Notice the pattern: pure branches like 子 and 卯 hide one spirit, while the "storage" branches — 辰戌丑未 (the four Earth branches) and others in transition seasons — hide several. That is why the same outline of a chart can feel very different once you count who is actually present.

Why readers care

Hidden stems matter for three classic reasons:

Seeing them without memorizing tables

You don't need the table in your head — the chart page shows the hidden stems of every branch on your chart automatically. What matters is noticing them when they appear: if a reading mentions a Support or Challenge character and you don't see it in the eight visible characters, it is almost certainly hiding inside a branch.

A respectful estimate, not a proof

Hidden-stem tables are traditional convention, and schools list them slightly differently for the storage branches. Treat a hidden character as one genuine flavor among several — a useful color, not a courtroom exhibit.

Open your chart and look inside your own branches — every branch's hidden stems are listed right next to it.
