Understanding Da Yun

Da Yun (大运, “great fortune”) divides a life into roughly ten-year chapters. Each chapter carries its own stem and branch — its own elemental weather — that plays against your birth chart. The birth chart is who you are; the Da Yun is the season you are living in.

Qi Yun — when the first chapter starts

Chapters do not begin at birth. There is a waiting period calledQi Yun (起运) — usually a few years — computed from your birth date, your gender, and the direction of your Year Pillar. A classic formula does the math: count the days between your birth and the turning solar term, then scale — three days count as one year, every two-hour double-hour as ten days. Forward or retrograde?

The direction is set by a simple classic rule: if your Year Pillar’s stem is Yang and you are male (or the stem is Yin and you are female), your Da Yun run forward through the sixty-cycle. The opposite combination runs retrograde. This is why the same birth date produces different life chapters for a man and a woman.

An actual chart's first chapters

Take the Yi Wood Day Master born 15 March 1995 we use throughout these pages. Its Qi Yun is computed to land at nominal age 3, on 21 March 1998, running retrograde because a Yin-Wood year with a male birth travels backward. Its opening chapters, then:

• 戊寅 (Wu Yin) — from 1998, your early-narrative years
• 丁丑 (Ding Chou) — the teens into the twenties
• 丙子 (Bing Zi) — the twenties into the thirties
• 乙亥 (Yi Hai) — the thirties into the forties, and so on backward through the wheel

Each chapter's stem and branch are then compared against the Day Master (here, Yin Wood) to name its theme — which years inside each decade ring loudest is the subject of critical years.

How a chapter is read

Each chapter’s stem and branch are compared with your Day Master:

• A chapter made of your own element — self-focus, partnerships, competition.
• A chapter that nourishes you — study, support, mentors, resources.
• A chapter you produce — creative output, projects, visibility, service.
• A chapter you manage — earnings, organization, material results.
• A chapter that presses on you — duty, structure, external expectations.

None of these are good or bad on their own. A pressured decade can be a promotion decade; a resource decade can be a time to study quietly before a leap.

Within the chapters: the years

Inside each ten-year chapter, individual years (流年) also pulse in their own element. When a year’s energy clicks with the chapter’s theme — say a Wealth year inside a Wealth chapter — readers flag it as a year to watch. Our chart page points out two or three such years per chapter.

The honest caveat

Da Yun is a framework for reflection, not a timetable of events. Different schools order chapters slightly differently, and no chart removes human choice. Read it as a season to work with — not a script to obey.
